Sieve Instruments makes the small instruments that sit on a lab bench and get used forty times a day: balances, pH meters, plate readers. Each one is calibrated at the factory, logs its own calibration history, and exposes every reading through an interface that is documented in plain language.

That last part was the point. Most bench instruments produce numbers that a scientist copies by hand into a notebook. Noor Haddad had spent six years as a lab manager, and she had counted the transcription errors. Her instruments send the number, the time, the operator and the calibration state to wherever the lab keeps its records.

Sieve shipped about 3,000 units before its acquisition in 2025. It never had a salesperson who was not also a former lab technician. The product has since been folded into a larger catalog, and the API has been left alone, at our request.

Why we invested

The first instrument arrived in the post with a one-page manual that was correct. Noor had priced the calibration in from the start, not as an upsell. We backed a founder who respected the person holding the pipette.

Colophon

This issue is set in Newsreader, a typeface for long reading by Production Type, with Instrument Sans for the small print. Printed in the browser on 100% post-consumer pixels. No trees were harmed; several laptop fans were mildly inconvenienced.

Paper: #F4F1EA. Ink: #141414. One bottle of oxblood, used sparingly and signed out by both partners.
