Before a new solar farm or battery connects to the grid, the utility runs a study. The study can take years, and the queue behind it holds roughly two terawatts of proposed generation and storage. Phaseyard builds the software that runs the study in weeks, using the utility’s own data and leaving the engineer’s judgment where it was.
Priya Raman worked on the planning side of a regional grid operator for ten years. Lars Eklund built power-flow models. The product lets an engineer run, check and compare a study on a laptop, and produces a report the utility can sign. It is meant for engineers who know exactly what a study should say and have no time to wait for it.
Phaseyard has completed studies for five utilities and has 22 more in progress. Median turnaround on a completed study is five weeks. Its first customer renewed after the first quarter, and the second asked for a version that could run on its own servers.
Why we invested
We said no in nine days, with two pages on why, and Priya rebuilt the plan around them. Eleven months later we said yes in six. That is the loop we hope to get with every company, and it happened once.
