A truck arrives at a yard, stops at a scale, waits for a reading, and drives on. Tareweight builds a scale that weighs a truck at walking pace, so the stop disappears. The reading goes to the yard system with the plate number attached, and the gate opens.
Hendrik Smit built weighing equipment for twenty years, first in the Netherlands and then in Kentucky. His scale is a flat platform bolted into the pavement. It is accurate to within the tolerance that regulators allow, and it is built for the kind of winter in which a plow will run over it.
Seven yards and depots use Tareweight today, and each has cut its gate time by about two minutes per truck. The company is small, and the next hire is a service technician. Hendrik prices the scale and the software together, per lane, and quotes the same figure to every customer.
Why we invested
Hendrik could tell us the price of a lane to the dollar and the weight of his scale to the pound. We looked for a founder who had thought about winter. He had thought about three.
